| Welcome to the Press! The term “Rogue” first appears in 1561, in John Awdeley’s: ‘Fraternity of Vagabonds.’ Originally applied to a class of wandering, dissolute persons, known for being mischievous or frolicsome; today it represents an entity set apart from the normal order, acting with autonomy. Thus, we get the modern terms: rogue-state, rogue-nation, and a personal favorite, rogue-variant! Though ‘The Mighty Rogue Press’ is very much an independent ‘art-haus-style' press, its goal is to publish works that celebrate the very nature of the rogue: that mischievous, independent, and irreverent spirit that seems to lurk in all of us. Upon hearing this, your first inclination might be to think of the Beat Generation, but this is not a celebration of hip, or hip culture. Instead we would like you think of the poet Dennis Brutus, writing in exile from the apartheid government of South Africa: “Yet somewhere lingers the stubborn hope / thus to endure can be a kind of fight, / preserve some value, assert some faith.” Here, without doubt, the exile, the rogue, reflects on the preservation of his humanity admits the struggle for 'Freedom'. It is from these lines that ‘The Mighty Rogue’ finds its bearing, and asserts, as an article of faith, “our independence is to be celebrated!” |
